Freeze Dance
Whole-class music game
- Balancing
- Stopping with control
- Body shapes
Children move freely to music and freeze into a still, balanced shape the moment it stops. It builds control, body awareness and listening, and works as a warm-up with any class.
- Players
- Whole class
- Space
- Hall
Equipment
- Music and a speaker
Coach tips
- Praise the stillest, most controlled shapes rather than putting children out.
- Cue a strong middle: tummy tight, arms out, eyes on one spot.
- Vary how long the music plays so children can’t predict the stop.
How to play
- 1
Spread the class out so everyone has their own space and can move without touching anyone.
- 2
Play music. Children travel around the space, dancing in their own way.
- 3
Stop the music. Everyone freezes straight away and holds a still shape.
- 4
Count to five out loud while children hold their shape, then start the music again.
- 5
Each round, call out a new shape to freeze in: tall, small, wide, twisted or on one foot.
Ways to play it
- Easier
Freeze in any shape, using two feet on the ground.
- Harder
Freeze on one foot, or with only three body parts touching the floor.
- Partner freeze
Pairs move together and freeze in a matching or mirrored shape.
